Michel Bérubé not only has a beautiful voice, he is unsurpassed in his interpretation when he sings in either French or English. Born and raised in Ste-Louise, a small village on the lower St. Lawrence River in Quebec, Michel lived in Montreal for 15 years before moving to Toronto where he spent 14 years recording and performing everywhere from The Top ‘o’ The Senator, to Casino Rama to the prestigious Town Hall in New York City.
In 2004, Michel’s independent radio release of O Holy Night was so well received he followed it up with an album that included a duet with Grammy Award winner Jennifer Warnes and from which four more tracks were added to radio playlists across North America. One of the tracks was selected for an EMI compilation of popular Christmas songs and Universal Music Canada also included another one of Michel’s songs on two of their compilations (A Canadian Christmas I and II).
Michel has shared the bill with the likes of The Faith Chorale, Jackie Richardson, Amy Sky, Steven Page, José Feliciano and Kenny Rogers to name a few. Michel is respected by his colleagues and music industry insiders alike. Famed fiddler Ashley MacIsaac and Canadian Jazz icon Guido Basso have also recorded with the Quebec native. Pop icons and Grammy award-winning artists Jennifer Warnes and Chrissie Hynde were both so impressed by his talent they recorded duets with him.
Michel’s three night-solo performances at Toronto’s Fleck Theatre in the Spring of 2009 had audiences on their feet demanding encores and Karen Gordon from CBC Radio said that “he was born to sing Brel”.
In the autumn of 2012, Jennifer Warnes asked Michel to join her on the Ontario leg of her tour to perform her famous duet Up Where We Belong, making Michel the only singer other than Joe Cocker to ever sing this iconic duet with Jennifer.
Michel partnered with Mark Lalama (Canadian Idol) as the Musical Director for his Fleck Theatre appearances and as the producer of his single Mama’s Words. Their most recent collaboration is HYMNES À L’AMOUR, a compilation of Michel’s favourite French songs by Luc Plamondon, Édith Piaf and Michel Legrand, among others, as well as his much anticipated duet with Chrissie Hynde.
His first mainstream single, Through Your Eyes was called “brilliant” by industry insider Larry Leblanc (Billboard Magazine, Canada). In 2009, Michel's original Christmas song, Mama’s Words was the fifth most popular Christmas song on Canadian radio charts in its second week of release, prompting numerous calls to radio stations and emails to Michel from people who were touched by the song's message. However Michel and producer and co-writer Mark Lalama felt they could make the song even more beautiful and spent some time in the studio reworking it. The result, Mama's Words (2015) is indeed lush, beautiful and perfectly interpreted by Michel whose gift for bringing honest and heartfelt emotion to the lyrics is unsurpassed.
